This was quite the transformation, the owner of this kitchen in Stourport-on-Severn had discovered a Quarry tiled floor under worn vinyl. Quite sensibly they had decided to throw out the vinyl and restore the original tiles which we believe were original to the Edwardian property.

Unfortunately, the vinyl has been fixed to the floor with adhesive and self-levelling cement had been spread across the tiles to make the floor completely flat. To restore the floor, it would be necessary to remove the old adhesive residues and cement before sealing.
After visiting the property to inspect the floor and run a few tests I was able to prepare a detailed quote for the restoration, which they were happy to accept.
Deep Cleaning an Edwardian Quarry Tiled Kitchen Floor
The restoration process started with the use of advanced rotary floor machinery fitted with a black pad together with Tile Doctor Remove and Go which is a coatings remover. This product is alkaline and safely stripped away decades of old floor coverings without damaging the Quarry tiles beneath.
Great care was taken throughout the work to avoid damage to the historic flooring and to ensure all traces of old adhesives, and cement residues were eliminated. The process was repeated several times, and the soiled residue was extracted using a wet vacuum.

Once fully prepared, the floor was thoroughly cleaned using Tile Doctor Pro-Clean and refined to reveal the original Edwardian tiles in their natural condition, restoring both the character and detail of the floor.
Sealing an Edwardian Quarry Tiled Kitchen
To complete the restoration, the floor was sealed using Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is a high-quality breathable sealer specifically selected for period Quarry tiles. This protective finish allows the tiles to breathe naturally and regulate moisture effectively, helping to preserve the long-term stability, durability, and appearance of the original Edwardian floor.

The completed work successfully restored the kitchen floor back to a clean, authentic, and historically sympathetic finish while enhancing the natural beauty of the original flooring.
My client was over the moon with the transformation and pleased to see the back of the dated vinyl. For aftercare I recommended the use of Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner to maintain the newly restored floor. This is a mild pH neutral cleaner which can be used daily particularly in high traffic areas such as the kitchen.
